Plans Unveiled for New St. Nikolaus Markt

The Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce has unveiled plans for the new St. Nikolaus Markt, scheduled for Friday, December 4, through Saturday, December 5, at Marktplatz. This family-friendly festival will replace the Weihnachten in Fredericksburg festival.

“The new St. Nikolaus Markt will feature an expanded shopping area, focusing on juried vendors offering high quality, unique merchandise for home and gift giving,” said Frances Rushing, president of the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce.

“The spelling of the name ‘St. Nikolaus’ was chosen to reflect the German heritage of our community,” noted Rushing. “St. Nikolaus is the patron saint of children, thus reflecting the family-friendly nature of this festival. St. Nikolaus Day in Germany is December 6th when St. Nikolaus visits children and presents candy and small presents. St. Nikolaus knows who has been naughty and nice!”

Entertainment already scheduled during the weekend festival includes the ever-popular highlights of the Nutcracker Ballet, performed by local ballet students, and the crowd-pleasing Sauerkrauts. Holiday foods with a German flare will tempt festival attendees throughout the weekend. Holiday arts and crafts will be available for children attending the festival.

The organizing committee has decided that the Christmas Tree Forest will not be part of the new festival.

Hours for the St. Nikolaus Markt are Friday, December 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (vendors will close at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening when the featured entertainers will take the stage).

The Admiral Nimitz Foundation has announced that President George H.W. Bush will be the guest of honor at the opening ceremonies of the Grand Opening of newly expanded National Museum of the Pacific War, with the opening of a new 32,000 square foot George H.W. Bush Gallery, as well as house the 16,000 square foot Center for Pacific War Studies. The entire site includes the George Bush Gallery, Admiral Nimitz Museum, Plaza of Presidents, Veterans' Walk of Honor and Memorial Wall, Japanese Garden of Peace, Pacific Combat Zone and the Center for Pacific War Studies. Activities for Saturday will include the Pacific Combat Zone Reenactment at 10:30am, 1:00pm and 3:30. From 3:00 - 5:00pm the Air Force Band of the West will perform. On Sunday World War II aircraft will be on display at the Gillespie County Airport and Pacific Combat Zone Reenactment at 10:30am and 3:30pm. From 1:30 - 2:30pm there will be a dedication of the Memorial to the men of the United States Submarine Service in World War II, in honor of RADM Charles D. Grojean, USN. Monday at 9:45am, precision parachute demonstration by the Golden Knights, Army Parachute Team. From 10:00 - 10:45am, will be the Grand Opening ceremonies and Ribbon Cutting. Musical performances, films, lectures and panel discussions will take place throughout the day at a variety of venues on the grounds. Join the Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools Trail for their open house at Luckenbach Historic School. The Trail allows visitors to learn about the education and customs of the 19th century residents of German heritage in the Hill Country. Each month a different rural county school will host an open house and tour. Color coded maps of the trail are available at the Visitor Center at 302 E. Austin Street.
